Greek airports handled 8.1 million passengers in the first four months of the year, up by 383 percent over the same period in 2021, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) said this week.
According to HCAA tentative data for the January-April 2022 period, Greek airports recorded 8.1 million arrivals on 89,690 flights, up from 1.7 million on 44,185 flights in the same four-months last year.
More specifically, the number of flights increased by 103 percent in the four months to April with 50,059 international flights and 39,631 domestic but still down by 9.6 percent when compared to the first four months of pre-pandemic 2019 and 99,164 flights.
Passenger flows were also down by 22.5 percent over 10.4 million arrivals in the January-April period in 2019, the HCAA said. April was in the lead in terms of overall performance with arrival and flight figures close to April 2019 levels.
For the month of April, according to HCAA data, a total of 3,591,241 passengers went through Greek airports up by 555.2 percent over the same month in 2021 and 548,102 arrivals.
Flight numbers for the same month in 2022 came to 33,367 at all Greek airports, 15,419 of which domestic and 17,948 international, marking a 153 percent increase against April 2021 and 13,191 flights in total. The figure is still down, however, by 1.1 percent compared to 2019 levels and 33,727 flights.
International arrivals in April increased by 1.179,8 percent or by 1,299,571 passengers compared to the same month in 2021 and 101,541 arrivals but still weaker by 4.1 percent when compared to pre-Covid 2019 and 3,745,671 arrivals in April.
International arrivals in April were down by 5.9 percent compared to the same month in 2019 and 1,380,543 arrivals.
