The Greek island of Tinos is preparing to launch seaplane transport operations after waterway managing company Hellenic Seaplanes announced that infrastructure construction was underway.
“Construction of the Tinos waterway has begun. The installation of land infrastructure is expected to be complete in March,” the company said in a statement.
Tinos in the Cyclades will be among the first islands to offer seaplane services from the port aiming to handle hundreds of travelers all year round. Passengers will be able to purchase tickets, check in and use the waiting area of the seaplane port facilities, the company said, aiming to be the first in Greece to offer hydroplane connections to the Cyclades and Dodecanese islands.
Hellenic Seaplanes is hoping to launch its first flights from the islands of Tinos, Patmos and Sifnos.
Hydroplane infrastructure is ready on the island of Patmos, the company said, fast-track procedures are underway for Sifnos and documentation has been submitted for the projects on Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros. The company is also awaiting permits for the seaplane port of Alimos in Attica making it the first such facility in Athens
Hellenic Seaplanes President and CEO Nikolas Charalambous expressed his satisfaction with the “developments in the waterways and seaplanes industry”, adding that there was optimism that Hellenic Seaplanes’ plans for the creation of a strong network of waterways in Greece will continue preparing for the first seaplane flights this season.
