It was April 12th when Athens International Airport welcomed a new cargo flight to Athens. Lufthansa Cargo’s twice-weekly flight, operated by an Airbus A321 Freighter, serves the Frankfurt – Larnaca – Athens – Frankfurt route. This is, of course, neither the first nor the last.
But it is indicative of the recent growth in the cargo, freight sector in Athens. For last year, annual volumes improved by 4.8% compared to 2021 and by 7.3% compared to 2019, as 101.5 thousand tonnes were handled.
The recovery of international flights to almost 90% of 2019 traffic, coupled with the increased operation of cargo flights (+5.4% compared to 2019) provided the local market with the “coveted” cargo capacity.
The outlook for 2023 is expected to be positive. Although the new year started at a slower pace, March figures increased again, outperforming 2019 volumes by 3.1%.
